Y5 - Swans

Swan Class is taught by Mrs Musgrave with Mrs Green as the Learning Support Assistant. Other staff members working with the class include Mr Frisby for Music on a Wednesday and Mr Bourne for PE on a Friday.

 

Rail Safety - Switched On Assembly

We joined Network Rail’s live virtual assembly to learn more about how to stay safe around trains and railways. We identified safety signs that would be found around a railway, discussed how to stay safe when crossing a railway line and at a station, as well as spotting hazardous behaviour of people around us when at a station and paying attention to our surroundings. 

Police Dogs Visit

As part of our ongoing careers curriculum, we were excited to welcome Officer Barrow and her canine partners, Akin and Griffin, from the local police. The dogs demonstrated their impressive skills in search and detection, showing how they are trained to find people and phones from human scent as well as illegal substances, firearms and cash. We were amazed by the dog’s efficiency and speed of doing this on the school field. During the visit, the officer shared insights into the essential skills required for the job, emphasising the importance of teamwork, training, and discipline in both handling K9s and working in law enforcement. 

Exploring Search Engines

The chicken are enjoying this terms computing topic of searches and systems. Today we explored and compared different search engines, including Google, DuckDuckGo, Bing and Ecosia. It was interesting to see which gave the best search result and which had the most adverts.

World Book Day!

We had a fantastic time celebrating World Book Day, we enjoyed dressing up as our favourite book characters in wonderful and creative costumes. Throughout the day, we shared our love of reading by writing book reviews, discussing our chosen characters and bringing stories to life through illustrations. It was an inspiring day full of imagination, creativity and sharing a love of books.

Step Into the NHS

 This afternoon, we explored the wide variety of careers within the NHS. From doctors and nurses to physiotherapists and laboratory technicians, the children learned about the vital roles each person plays in keeping our communities healthy. To showcase their creativity and understanding, the children designed brilliant posters as part of a competition, highlighting the many different jobs in the NHS. The vibrant and informative posters demonstrate their enthusiasm and newfound appreciation for the essential work done by these healthcare heroes.

Shang Dynasty Timeline

We have started our exciting history topic of the Shang Dynasty, one of China’s earliest civilisations. We explored and sequenced key events from this period, discovering the rise and fall of powerful kings and the importance of oracle bones and bronze. 

Super Sonia Delaunay Inspired Creations

We have worked hard to create abstract art pieces inspired by Sonia Delaunay's style. We researched her Orphism art style and different media types that she used. Using our knowledge of watercolours we adjusted the tint and shade of colours alongside using geometric shapes to create our final pieces. 

Pete the Poet

Today we had a visit from Pete the Poet. Our workshop focused on diversity amongst our community, including our class and our world. The children expressed this through song, poems and dressing up. 

Brilliant Burgers

In Design and Technology, we embarked on a delicious project to design and make our own burgers from scratch. This began by researching different types of burgers, exploring ingredients, and understanding the importance of nutrition. Using our knowledge, we carefully designed our ideal burgers, considering both taste and healthy options. We then put their plans into action, making and cooking the burger patties and constructing everything together. We enjoyed tasting the results of our hard work and creativity!

Day & Night Practical

In our recent science practical, the children demonstrated their understanding of how day and night are formed by exploring the relationship between the Earth and the Sun. Using a balloon to represent the Earth and a torch to symbolise the Sun, the children illustrated how the Earth's rotation causes day and night. They took turns rotating the balloon to show how different parts of the Earth experience daylight and darkness, reinforcing their knowledge of this key concept in Earth's movement.

Safer Internet Day

We celebrated Safer Internet Day by learning important tips on how to stay safe online. The children engaged in thoughtful discussions about internet safety, then chose a category to focus on, such as cyberbullying, privacy, or online friendships. Using their creativity, they designed comic strips to illustrate key safety messages, showcasing their understanding of how to navigate the digital world responsibly.

Databases in Real Life

This term we have been exploring data bases. We have learnt how to retrieve and use data from databases to answer questions and form charts to identify data quickly. Today we explored a live real life data base - flight finding. We used our knowledge to find specific flights, identify departure times and much more.

Careers Visit - Superintendent 

 

Today, we had the privilege of welcoming Superintendent Rob Brind from Hampshire Contact Management. He shared insights into the role of the police, how to join the police force and the varied experiences and opportunities within policing. We are incredibly grateful to Superintendent Brind for spending his afternoon with Swans, answering many thoughtful questions and broadening their understanding of careers in law enforcement. 

Amazing Africa!

On Friday 24th January, the children embarked on an exciting geographical journey as part of our annual Geography Day. This year, the focus was on the continent Africa.

The children explored various countries in Africa, learning about their populations, cultural traditions and unique differences. A highlight of the day was tasting Jollof rice, a popular dish from Western Africa - many children enjoyed it so much that they wanted seconds! 
 

We then turned our attention to Ghanaian culture, where children discovered the beauty of Kente cloth. They worked together to create their own paper Kente cloth patterns, weaving and decorating them with vibrant designs inspired by traditional cloth. 
 

It was a fantastic day of learning, creativity and cultural appreciation, leaving children with a deeper understanding of the world around them. 🌍🗺️

SCARF Workshop - Calming a Busy Brain!

This week, the children enjoyed a visit from Harold to learn more about the impact of stress and how to relieve stress. The children discussed how different images and scenarios made them feel and came worked together to come up with strategies to support themselves and others.

WaterAid Workshop

We were excited to have a live assembly with Deirdre, who is a volunteer for WaterAid. It was great to learn more about the work of the charity, how to contribute and explore how other countries battle limited water supplies. 

Perfect Poets!

The children worked hard to write and submit a poem into a Young Writer competition. All of Swans were chosen for publication in the book Wonderverse! Brill!

Money Maths

Marvellous Museum Trip

We had a wonderful trip to the Rural Life Museum in Glastonbury as part of our topic on the Victorians. We had a brilliant Victorian life workshop where the children explored artefacts and worked together to be a history detectives to discuss how the object may have been used. We were also able explore how some Victorian women cooked drop scones for afternoon tea. The children explored the ingredients and then watched as they were cooked on an open range stove. The best part was eating them, still warm! We learnt how some rugs were made by repurposing old vegetable sacks and rags, then we started to create our own using a similar technique. 

The children loved exploring the other exhibitions in the museum and finding out about Somerset's heritage. 

Developing Democracy- Learning with the Lords Online 

This week, we were incredibly fortunate to have the opportunity, alongside Year 6, to meet via teams with Baroness Scott from Needham Market. The children engaged in a workshop whereby they learned about the Houses of Parliament and the differences between the House of Lords and the House of Commons before having the opportunity to ask any questions which they may have had. The children showed great maturity and enthusiasm about their learning around parliament. Well done, Swan Class! 

Careers Day - "When I grow up I want to be..."

Languages Day

We loved celebrating European Day of Languages. Swan class were the country Spain, we wore colours of the Spanish flag - red and yellow. Throughout the day we practiced simple Spanish phrases, had a tour of Madrid, and were able to try some different Spanish food. 

Outdoor Learning - Rivers

We have been using our outdoor learning lessons to console our Geography learning. Using our knowledge of river features, we created miniature rivers using soil, rocks and tinfoil.
