Welcome to Hedgehogs. Year 4 is taught by Miss Kitto and supported with Miss Darch and Miss Trott. We are lucky enough to have Mr Bourne who teaches our PE on Fridays and Miss Roberts for Music on a Wednesday.
Tuesday 25th November 2025 - Road safety workshop
Today, the children took part in an important Road Safety Talk led by our local road safety team. They learnt how to stay safe when walking near roads, the importance of using crossings, and why being alert—not distracted—is so important.
The children practised stopping, looking, and listening, and discussed how bright or reflective clothing helps them be seen. They asked thoughtful questions and shared their own experiences of travelling to school safely.
It was a valuable session that helped our pupils understand how to make sensible choices and keep themselves safe in the community.
Thursday 20th November 2025 - Carrymore workshops
This week, our children took part in a hands-on Fantastic Plastics workshop, where they explored how everyday items can be reused to help our environment. Using recycled plastic bottles, the children created their very own mini greenhouses and planted cress seeds inside.
They carefully prepared their planters, learned about what plants need to grow, and discussed how reusing plastic can reduce waste. The children loved checking on their cress and are excited to watch it sprout over the coming days!
It was a brilliant opportunity for them to combine creativity, science, and sustainability—showing how small changes can make a big difference.
Children in need - Friday 14th November 2025
This year, our class proudly took part in Children in Need! We challenged ourselves with a 25-minute yoga session and read 25 pages of our class reader, raising both our bodies and minds for a great cause. It was wonderful to see everyone participating with such enthusiasm and spirit, helping to support children in need across the country.
Odd socks - Anti bullying week 10th - 14th November 2025
For Odd Socks Day and Anti-Bullying Week, our class celebrated individuality and kindness! We wore fun, colourful odd socks to show that it’s okay to be different, and we took part in activities to learn how to stand up to bullying and support one another. The children shared thoughtful ideas about respect, friendship, and how we can make our school a safe and happy place for everyone.
Family learning - Thank you for joining us!
A huge thank you to all the parents who joined us for our Family Learning session! We had a fantastic time playing lots of times table games together, helping children build their confidence and skills in a fun way. We hope you enjoyed taking the games home to continue learning and practising as a family. Your support makes such a difference, and we can’t wait to see you at our next session!
Somerset Cricket coaching – A real highlight for Hedgehogs this half-term. Thank you Shaun.
Each Tuesday, the Hedgehogs class enjoyed an exciting hour of Somerset Cricket coaching with Shaun. The children developed a range of cricket skills, beginning with warm-up games to build coordination and teamwork. They practised accurate throwing and confident catching before moving on to batting techniques, learning how to hold the bat correctly and strike the ball with control. Fielding games helped them understand how to work together as a team, communicate effectively and support each other during play. Each session ended with a friendly match where everyone had a chance to put their new skills into action. The children showed fantastic enthusiasm and sportsmanship throughout — a real highlight of the half-term!
Hello Yellow – Looking after our mental health.
For Hello Yellow Day, our class celebrated by filling the classroom with bright shades of yellow to support mental health awareness. Everyone came dressed in cheerful yellow clothes, and the room was decorated with sunshine-themed artwork and positive messages. The children took part in activities that encouraged kindness, friendship, and talking about feelings. Together, they shared what makes them happy and how they can help others feel good too. It was a joyful, uplifting day that reminded us all of the importance of looking after our wellbeing and spreading positivity.
Computing this half term - Programming using Turtle Academy!
In Computing this half-term, Hedgehogs have been learning all about programming using Turtle Academy! The children have explored how to give clear instructions, or commands, to make the turtle move and draw shapes on the screen. They practised using coding vocabulary such as forward, turn, and repeat, building their understanding of sequences and patterns. As their confidence grew, they experimented with creating their own designs and combining commands to form more complex shapes and pictures. The sessions have been a fantastic introduction to programming, encouraging problem-solving, creativity, and logical thinking.
Art and DT - Our clay masterpieces.
In Art and Design Technology this half term, Hedgehogs have been busy creating a range of exciting clay masterpieces! Inspired by Nick Park’s famous characters such as Wallace and Gromit and Shaun the Sheep, the children designed and sculpted their own imaginative cartoon figures, focusing on expression and detail. To celebrate the Festival of Light, they also crafted beautiful Diya lamps, carefully shaping and decorating them with bright colours and patterns. Linking to our Geography and Science topics, the children modelled volcanoes and a selection of mini beasts, using their clay skills to explore texture, form, and structure. These projects have helped them refine their techniques, express creativity, and make meaningful connections across the curriculum.
Careers Day 2025!
For Careers Day, Hedgehogs had a fantastic opportunity to meet visitors from a range of local and national organisations. Representatives from SASP, Old Mill, the RNLI, and the Royal Navy each spent 20 minutes with the class, sharing their knowledge and experiences. The children learned about different jobs, the skills needed for each role, and how these careers help people and communities. They asked thoughtful questions and were inspired by the variety of paths available to them in the future. It was an engaging and informative day that sparked curiosity and excitement about the world of work.
Poetry visit - Monday 14th October
Year 4 had the wonderful opportunity to welcome poet Sheila Hopkins to our school. Sheila shared her experiences of creating poetry and inspired the children by telling stories about her journey as a poet before moving to New Zealand.
As part of her visit, Sheila gifted the school three of her books, giving our pupils the chance to explore her work further and spark their own creativity. During the session, Year 4 created poetry based on the theme of Remembrance, guided by Sheila’s tips and techniques.
The children left feeling inspired and motivated to continue writing their own poetry, taking on board the insights from a professional poet’s experience.
