    Welcome to Year 1!

    Mrs Kerrigan is the class teacher, and she is assisted by 2 amazing Learning Support Assistants, who are Mrs Evans and Mrs Alexander. The children are also taught by Mr Bourne for PE on a Monday, and Mrs Roberts for Music on a Wednesday.

    2025-2026

    Kingfisher Art Exhibition

    Dragonfly Class were delighted to take part in the Annual Kingfisher Art Exhibition. The children felt incredibly proud seeing their artwork beautifully displayed for everyone to enjoy. They also loved exploring the exhibition and admiring the amazing creations produced by the other classes. It was a wonderful celebration of creativity.

    Kingston Maurward Animal Park

    Dragonfly Class had a fantastic day on their school trip to Kingston Maurward Animal Park. The children were excited to meet lots of farm animals and especially enjoyed feeding the friendly goats. They then explored the beautiful gardens, where they were thrilled to discover a larger‑than‑life dragon in the lake, waiting to be spotted among the water and greenery. To finish the day, the class visited the newborn lambs, who were an absolute delight and a perfect end to their adventure.

    Kites

    Dragonfly Class had a wonderful time in DT, where they followed a design brief to create their very own diamond kites. The children carefully planned their designs, chose their materials, and worked hard to construct strong, colourful kites that they were proud of. Once finished, they took them out to the playground to test them.

    Pete the Poet

    Dragonfly Class enjoyed a brilliant session with Pete the Poet, filled with creativity, imagination, and lots of laughter. The children loved dressing up in a variety of fun costumes, stepping into different characters as they worked together to make up imaginative stories. They also created their own pieces of poetry, inspired by Pete’s lively prompts and playful ideas. It’s always a highlight of the year, and once again the session proved to be an inspiring and thoroughly enjoyable experience for everyone.

     

    Science Day

    Dragonfly Class had an exciting Science Day, exploring a range of hands‑on experiments as they moved around different classrooms and worked with various teachers. Each session offered something new to discover, and the children loved trying out activities they wouldn’t normally do. In the Year 1 classroom, they learned all about how sound travels through vibrations and had great fun making their own paper telephones to test this out. The children were fascinated by how clearly they could hear each other through the string and enjoyed experimenting with distance and tension. It was a day full of curiosity, learning, and enthusiastic budding scientists!

    World Book Day

     

    Dragonfly Class had a fantastic time celebrating World Book Day! The children arrived in a wonderful array of costumes, each one showing off their favourite characters with pride. During the day, they used their imaginations to write an exciting story about a magical land at the top of the Faraway Tree, filling their pages with adventure and creativity. They also enjoyed making their own colourful bookmarks and writing about their outfits, explaining why they chose their characters. We also had visitors from Leonardos who came and read the children a story.  It was a fun-filled day packed with reading, writing, and plenty of smiles!

    Christmas Activities

    The Dragonflies have been getting into the festive spirit with some wonderful Christmas crafts!
    They had a fantastic time decorating reindeer biscuits with lots of creativity and colour. The classroom was filled with the warm, spicy scent of clove oranges as they made beautiful seasonal decorations. To top it all off, the children enjoyed making Christingle oranges with Rev Sarah, learning about their special meaning while creating something truly memorable.

    History of Toys Workshop

    Dragonfly Class had a wonderful morning learning about toys from the past. Natasha from the Heritage Centre brought in a range of old toys and talked to the children about them. The class then had the chance to dress up in Victorian clothes, make thaumatropes, explore the toys, and compare old with new. It was such a fun and memorable experience!

    Road Safety Workshop

    Martin visited to talk to the children about road safety. They learned the important steps of Stop, Look, Listen and Think, and he explained the different types of road crossings. He also talked about why it’s so important to be seen in the dark when near roads.

     

    Clay Leaves

    The children had great fun using autumn leaves to make their own clay dishes. They rolled out the clay, pressed a leaf on top to capture all the lovely shapes and veins, then carefully cut around it and gently shaped it into a little bowl. It was a lovely, hands-on autumn activity!

    Carymoor Visit

    Dragonflies had a fantastic session with Gary and Kate from Carymoor, where they learned all about the importance of recycling, reducing waste, and reusing everyday items. Gary began with an exciting guessing game, challenging the children to identify different pieces of rubbish from his clues. After that, they headed outside for a fast-paced relay game, sorting rubbish into the correct categories. The children loved the teamwork and the chance to put their new knowledge into action.They also explored a collection of impressive items made entirely from recycled materials. The handbag crafted from can ring pulls was a particular favourite and really inspired the children.It was a brilliant session, and the Dragonflies thoroughly enjoyed their time with the Carymoor team.

    Salt-dough Hedgehogs

    The children had great fun during Outdoor Learning this week creating salt-dough hedgehogs. They incorporated natural resources such as sticks for spines and berries and seeds for eyes, resulting in imaginative and nature-inspired creations.

    Firework Pictures

    Dragonfly Class created some fantastic firework pictures using chalk. The children used lots of vibrant colours and showed great creativity in their designs, incorporating rockets and a variety of imaginative firework shapes to produce striking, eye-catching artwork.

    Outdoor Learning - Leaves

    This half term, the class will be enjoying some outdoor learning, with a focus on the changing seasons. This week, the children explored why leaves change colour and fall from trees in Autumn. After learning about the science behind this transformation, they went on a leaf hunt around the school grounds, collecting leaves of various colours. They then matched their finds to a colour sheet, creating a vibrant display that celebrated the beauty of nature and reinforced their understanding of seasonal change.

    Creating Sandwiches

    This week, Dragonfly Class explored the world of sandwiches with a fun and creative twist! Inspired by the book The Disgusting Sandwich, the children designed their own imaginative (and truly disgusting!) sandwich creations.They also took part in a reading comprehension activity all about jam sandwiches, answering questions and discussing ingredients. To finish off the week, they made their own real sandwiches, choosing from cheese, ham, jam, and cucumber as fillings.

    Making Bread

    This week in DT, Dragonfly Class designed and made their own bread rolls. They chose their own shapes and fillings—chocolate, plain, or raisins—and enjoyed getting hands-on with mixing, kneading, and baking. A tasty way to learn!

     

    Careers Day

    Dragonfly Class had an exciting and insightful morning during Careers Day, where they welcomed seven professionals from a variety of industries to share their career journeys. Each visitor spoke about how they got into their roles, the challenges they’ve overcome, and what their day-to-day work involves.They listened attentively and asked thoughtful, curious questions, showing a real interest in the world of work and what it takes to succeed.

    Black History Month

    As part of our Black History Month celebrations, Dragonfly Class explored the lives of significant Black individuals who have made a lasting impact on society. One of the key figures they learned about was Rosa Parks, whose courageous stand against racial segregation sparked a movement for justice and equality.To deepen their understanding, the children reenacted Rosa Parks' story, stepping into her shoes to experience the emotions and challenges she faced. This immersive activity helped them grasp the importance of standing up for what is right.Following the reenactment, the class engaged in a thoughtful discussion about respect and fairness, reflecting on how these values shape our communities and relationships.

    Chance to Shine 2

    The children learnt more skills from Sean today, as part of the Chance to Shine cricket programme. They have been learning new skills each week — today, they focused on perfecting their bowling action. Everyone worked hard and showed great improvement.

     

    Dot Day

    Dragonfly Class had lots of fun celebrating Dot Day! We listened to the inspiring story all about individuality and making your mark, then worked together to paint colourful dots on the letters of the word Dragonfly. Our collaborative artwork looks fantastic (and is displayed on our classroom window) and it reminds us that everyone’s mark matters!

    Chalk Portraits on th playground in Art

    As part of our Art curriculum this term, the children have been learning all about portraits. They had great fun creating their own using chalk on the playground during a very sunny afternoon! The results were bright, creative, and full of personality — just like our artists!

    Chance 2 Shine Cricket Coaching with Sean from Somerset Cricket Foundation

    We’ve been very lucky to have Sean from Somerset Cricket visit our classes this term! The children have been learning the basic techniques of batting and fielding, developing their skills and teamwork whilst having lots of fun. 🏏
