Year 6 is taught by Mrs Farnell with Miss Ellery working in class as the Learning Support Assistant. We were incredibly pleased to welcome the talented Pete the Poet for another year of workshops with our children. Through the session, the children learnt about the importance of celebrating diversity and being inquisitive while respectful of different lives and backgrounds. It was another brilliant session which also encouraged a deeper understanding of tolerance and diversity (and, of course, the opportunity to dress up!). Thank you, Pete, for another brilliant session – the children loved it!
This Science Day, we focussed on the importance of enquiry and asking questions. The children loved visiting different classes alongside their younger peers to complete a variety of experiments from Chromatography, looking at the effects of gravity, the visible colour spectrum, exploring sound waves and investigating buoyancy too. A fantastic day - thank you to all the teachers for planning interesting investigations for the children to enjoy!
The children loved celebrating World Book Day again this year. They were enthusiastic about sharing who their characters were and why they had chosen to dress as them and loved the buzz of different activities throughout the day. It was wonderful to see their costumes and to see them enjoying reading throughout the day. Well done, Year 6!
This term, we have been incredibly fortunate to work with Hot Poets, in particular the very talented Jonathon Seagrave (Johnny Fluffpunk). The children had three workshops alongside Johnny and two pre-recorded workshops led by the legendary Michael Rosen to create some fantastic poems. They worked on a variety of poetry types and focussed heavily on sustainability and ways to support our planet. To complete the programme, the children performed their poems in their very own poetry recital. A fantastic opportunity with some truly incredible poems - well done, Owl Class!
The children loved learning about the importance of mental health and wellbeing as we celebrated Children's Mental Health Day. They thoroughly enjoyed the workshop with Mrs Streetin and learning different strategies to support their mental health. Well done, Year 6!
Kingfisher loved celebrating Chinese New Year this year with a wonderful parade put on by LKDN and Minnows. Owl Class gathered in the hall to watch the parade and did a wonderful job in supporting our young pupils. Well done, Owl Class!
We were incredibly fortunate to welcome the PCSOs today to learn about how to be safe around dogs. The children asked some fantastic questions and were incredibly inquisitive about different scenarios and how they should act. They also loved talking about their beloved (and somewhat mischievous) pets at home too! Thank you so much for coming in!
In science this term, we have been focussing on the human body and different systems which enable us to live. The children have loved learning about the respiratory and circulatory systems. Today, we have been focussing on lung capacity and seeing if body composition affects the amount of air which we can store in our lungs. The results were somewhat surprising. Well done, Owl Class!
Kingfisher were incredibly fortunate to welcome Nick from Bugfest back and learn his incredible knowledge about different minibeasts. The children loved learning about the different insects and were incredibly brave when holding some too! Thank you, Nick for visiting us - your knowledge was amazing and the children were buzzing after your visit.
In Art this term, the children have loved exploring the work of Victor Spinski and his realism clay techniques. The children loved looking at real life objects and trying to replicate their own to make them look as realistic as possible. The final pieces will be showcased at our Art Exhibition next term!
We were incredibly fortunate to welcome Dr Beth Lane into school for an incredible AI workshop. The children were able to explore the benefits of AI as well as learn about some of the common traits to spot whether something was real or not. They loved exploring different apps which use AI to their benefit and learning about how AI is helping our planet. Thank you, Beth for giving up your time to come into our school.
Year 6 did a fantastic job at representing our school at the Sustainable Futures Careers event at Huish Park. The children were incredibly brave and all presented about the benefits and limitations of AI on the natural world. A fantastic speaking and listening experience alongside some informative presentations from sustainable career paths in the future. The children loved the opportunity to practise flying drones and completing different challenges too! A brilliant day had by all.
We were incredibly fortunate to have a visit from the DVSA who brought in some of their fantastic technology and taught the children all about Road Safety and safe loads. They loved experiencing the different vehicles, dressing up in the uniforms and learning about whether the cars were a safe weight for their user load. Thank you to Mr Fage for coming in with his colleagues and forming the connection. A brilliant afternoon was had by all!
We were incredibly fortunate to meet Harold the Giraffe yet again in our SCARF workshop. The children enjoyed learning about different substances and how to keep their brains and bodies healthy as well as looking at the importance of mental health. Excellent listening and participation, Year 6 - well done!
Owl Class have loved the lead-up to Christmas, they thoroughly enjoyed their Christmas lunch, Christmas Party and having a visit from our very own Elf too! From all in Owl Class, we wish you a wonderful Christmas break!
Year 6 loved making their Christingles with Reverand Sarah as part of their Christmas festivities. They learned about the religious meaning behind the Christingle and showed great focus and determination. Well done, Owl Class!
As part of our annual Kingfisher tradition, the children were so grateful that the PTA paid for the whole school to attend this years pantomime of Beauty and the Beast. The children loved the performance and their snacks provided by the PTA. Thank you to our incredible PTA for all that they do.
As part of our DT, the children became chocolate makers for the term. They had to design, make and evaluate their own chocolates as well as the packaging and branding. Incredible resilience and perseverance were shown by all, along with some interesting choices on flavours, making each creation unique.
The children have loved exploring websites this term and explored their functions before deciding on a topic which they felt passionately about to create their own websites. They worked together to ensure they had buttons to navigate between their pages and developed their fluency when typing on the laptops. Fantastic work, Owl Class - well done!
The children loved tasting their chocolates and evaluating what their favourites were when designing their DT products. They did a fantastic job distinguishing between the different flavours and now have a clear idea of their preferences for their final chocolates. Well done, Owl Class.
Key Stage 2 were proud to welcome Tom who works in Parliament to talk about his job role and educate them a bit about the Houses of Parliament. They learnt about the roles of the House of Commons and the House of Lords as well as how to become a politician as well. The children listened diligently and asked brilliant questions- well done, Owl Class.
We were incredibly fortunate to welcome back Simon from Robert Frith optometrists to aid the children in their learning about Light in Science when looking at the eye. It was an incredible session where the children learnt about glaucoma, cataracts and other eye conditions as well as the different roles of the various parts. Thank you, Simon, for visiting our school again to educate the children about your career and the importance of our eyes.
This week, we celebrated Anti-bullying week. The children celebrated the importance of being kind to each other no matter what our values are and treating others how we would like to be treated. They also talked about their moral compasses and the understanding of treating all human beings with respect and kindness, regardless of differences. Well done, Owls!
As an introduction to our Ancient Greece topic, the children enjoyed exploring key dates surrounding the achievements of the Ancient Greeks. Here you can see them working collaboratively and learning about all of the inventions and new introductions during the Ancient Greek period.
With an RE focus, the children loved exploring the different views around kindness and understood that this was a common theme amongst all religions. They listened to differing viewpoints brilliantly and enjoyed debating whether we should always forgive all bad doings - drawing on their learning from the different religions. Well done, Owl Class!
Owl Class had a fantastic time raising money throughout the day with their challenge 45 sessions. They looked brilliant in their Pudsey-inspired outfits and enjoyed completing their fitness challenges throughout the day - well done, Owl Class!
Today, we were incredibly fortunate to have the incredible Mrs Montgomery visit the school and talk about her role as the High Sheriff of Somerset. The children loved hearing about what her voluntary role entailed and asked some insightful questions relating to the work which she does and how she came to gain her title. They were also impressed to hear that she was heading to Wells Cathedrals Charter House this evening for the opening of their remembrance exhibition where some of their poems written with Sheila Hopkins are on display. Thank you for giving up your invaluable time to visit us and for taking the chance to answer all of Year 6's questions. A truly inspirational visit for all.
We were incredibly fortunate to go to Westlands and hear the incredible Paterson Joseph talk about his latest historical-fiction novel '10 Children who Changed the World'. The children loved listening to his inspiring talk about his motives behind his writing and understanding the historical prejudice and racism which occurred during that time period. This visit linked beautifully to our learning on Black History Month and the children asked some fantastic questions when asked by Paterson Joseph himself to ask questions about his novels. Very well done, Owl Class!
Owl Class showcased their fantastic painting skills in their final lesson of Art for this half-term. They demonstrated brilliant brush control and inspiration of the swirls in Starry Night when creating their very own pieces inspired by this incredible piece of artwork. We hope you enjoy seeing them as much as the children loved creating them. Well done, Owl Class!
As part of our DT project this term, the children loved researching, designing, making and evaluating their brilliant balloon cars. The children showed great resilience and problem-solving skills when troubleshooting their balloon cars and getting them to work. They loved testing them in the school hall where the friction was less and showed that their creations had indeed been successful! Well done, Owl Class!
On Friday 17th October, we were incredibly fortunate to have lots of visitors into class to talk about a variety of careers. The children loved learning about the different jobs and paths to becoming successful. We explored computing with a representative from CtrlO, accounting through the NTR, lifesaving through the RNLI, sports coaching through SASP, consulting through the Old Mill, air traffic controlling through the Navy and software engineering through BAE systems. Thank you to all our visitors and Miss Kitto for creating an insightful morning- it was brilliant to see the children so engaged and asking so many insightful questions.
The children have loved exploring painting in the style of Vincent Van Gogh this term. They have learned about his life and become inspired when creating their own 'Starry Night' inspired pieces. Below are some of our young artistes in action!
This week, the children have loved learning about Black History and the importance of celebrating the world culture regardless of race or nationality. Through exploring the work of Rosa Parks and Martin Luther King, the children developed their understanding of the incredible things that black people have achieved and the unfortunate prejudice and racism which they have been subjected to in the past. They wrote their own speeches inspired by Martin Luther King's 'I have a dream...' and created this beautiful patchwork quilt as part of our PSHE promoting equality and diversity. On Monday 14th October, Year 6 had the wonderful opportunity to welcome poet Sheila Hopkins to our school. Sheila shared her experiences of creating poetry and inspired the children by telling stories about her journey as a poet before moving to New Zealand.
As part of her visit, Sheila gifted the school three of her books, giving our pupils the chance to explore her work further and spark their own creativity. During the session, Year 4 created poetry based on the theme of Remembrance, guided by Sheila’s tips and techniques.
The children left feeling inspired and motivated to continue writing their own poetry, taking on board the insights from a professional poet’s experience.
The whole school was awash with yellow to celebrate Children's Mental Health on Friday 10th October. The children wrote instructions on how to improve mental health, identified trusted people within their lives and developed their awareness of different ways to manage their emotions as well as taking some time to do some mindfulness colouring. Very insightful conversations were had by all. Well done, Owl Class!
The children have loved learning about the story of Prahlad and Holika when learning about the origins of the Holi Festival. They loved exploring the story through drama and were able to articulate the moral of the story and why it is important to Hindus. They understand it is a celebration of good triumphing evil and explored the motives and meaning behind the story through this drama re-enactment. Well done, Owls!
The children loved exploring Dot Day by creating their own pledges on how they will make their 'mark' during their last year at Primary School. Each child designed a dot or shape whereby they wrote their pledge on what they would like to focus on in the year ahead. The day was inspired by the book 'The Dot' by Peter H. Reynolds and celebrated creativity, courage and making your mark. The children all had some wonderful ideas – well done, Owl Class!
As part of our computing curriculum this term, the children have been developing their debugging skills when using Scratch for programming. They have loved exploring the programming and have been working hard to create their own interactive games, including a scoring system with changing variables. The children's resilience has been impressive and their determination to make their programmes work has been commendable. Well done, Owls – keep up the great work!
On Thursday 25th September 2025, we celebrated our annual European Day of Languages at Kingfisher. This year, Years 3 and 6 collaborated to focus on learning some German for the day. The children loved learning about the culture in Germany, exploring how to say numbers, greetings and family members as well as spending the morning making gingerbread and creating fact files all about Germany. They loved tasting their gingerbread in the afternoon and joining Mrs Farnell and Mr Green with the Year 3s for a German workshop. A fantastic day was had by all! Well done, Owl Class!
As part of our PSHE topic 'Me and My Relationships' the children loved exploring how they can use their communication skills to work collaboratively with their peers. The children had limited resources to build a structure which would be freestanding. It was amazing to see their creativity and initiative in this challenge and some of their structures were truly impressive! Well done, Owls!
