Welcome to Owl Class!

Year 6 is taught by Mrs Farnell with Miss Ellery working in class as the Learning Support Assistant. Other staff working with the children include: Miss Roberts for Music every Wednesday and Mr Bourne for PE each Friday. Below, you will find an overview of our learning throughout the year. Further updates can be accessed on the school's Twitter page.

Superb Sheriff Visit – The High Sheriff of Somerset

Today, we were incredibly fortunate to have the incredible Mrs Montgomery visit the school and talk about her role as the High Sheriff of Somerset. The children loved hearing about what her voluntary role entailed and asked some insightful questions relating to the work which she does and how she came to gain her title. They were also impressed to hear that she was heading to Wells Cathedrals Charter House this evening for the opening of their remembrance exhibition where some of their poems written with Sheila Hopkins are on display. Thank you for giving up your invaluable time to visit us and for taking the chance to answer all of Year 6's questions. A truly inspirational visit for all.

Awe-inspiring Authors: Paterson Joseph - 10 Children who Changed the World

We were incredibly fortunate to go to Westlands and hear the incredible Paterson Joseph talk about his latest historical-fiction novel '10 Children who Changed the World'. The children loved listening to his inspiring talk about his motives behind his writing and understanding the historical prejudice and racism which occurred during that time period. This visit linked beautifully to our learning on Black History Month and the children asked some fantastic questions when asked by Paterson Joseph himself to ask questions about his novels. Very well done, Owl Class!

Amazing Artists – Van Gogh Inspired Final Pieces

Owl Class showcased their fantastic painting skills in their final lesson of Art for this half-term. They demonstrated brilliant brush control and inspiration of the swirls in Starry Night when creating their very own pieces inspired by this incredible piece of artwork. We hope you enjoy seeing them as much as the children loved creating them. Well done, Owl Class!

Brilliant Balloon Cars

As part of our DT project this term, the children loved researching, designing, making and evaluating their brilliant balloon cars. The children showed great resilience and problem-solving skills when troubleshooting their balloon cars and getting them to work. They loved testing them in the school hall where the friction was less and showed that their creations had indeed been successful! Well done, Owl Class!

Cracking Careers

On Friday 17th October, we were incredibly fortunate to have lots of visitors into class to talk about a variety of careers. The children loved learning about the different jobs and paths to becoming successful. We explored computing with a representative from CtrlO, accounting through the NTR, lifesaving through the RNLI, sports coaching through SASP, consulting through the Old Mill, air traffic controlling through the Navy and software engineering through BAE systems. Thank you to all our visitors and Miss Kitto for creating an insightful morning- it was brilliant to see the children so engaged and asking so many insightful questions.

Vivid Van Gogh's

The children have loved exploring painting in the style of Vincent Van Gogh this term. They have learned about his life and become inspired when creating their own 'Starry Night' inspired pieces. Below are some of our young artistes in action!

Brilliant Black History

This week, the children have loved learning about Black History and the importance of celebrating the world culture regardless of race or nationality. Through exploring the work of Rosa Parks and Martin Luther King, the children developed their understanding of the incredible things that black people have achieved and the unfortunate prejudice and racism which they have been subjected to in the past. They wrote their own speeches inspired by Martin Luther King's 'I have a dream...' and created this beautiful patchwork quilt as part of our PSHE promoting equality and diversity. Well done, Owl Class!

Perfect Poetry

On Monday 14th October,  Year 6 had the wonderful opportunity to welcome poet Sheila Hopkins to our school. Sheila shared her experiences of creating poetry and inspired the children by telling stories about her journey as a poet before moving to New Zealand.

As part of her visit, Sheila gifted the school three of her books, giving our pupils the chance to explore her work further and spark their own creativity. During the session, Year 4 created poetry based on the theme of Remembrance, guided by Sheila’s tips and techniques.

The children left feeling inspired and motivated to continue writing their own poetry, taking on board the insights from a professional poet’s experience.

Magical Mental Health Day

The whole school was awash with yellow to celebrate Children's Mental Health on Friday 10th October. The children wrote instructions on how to improve mental health, identified trusted people within their lives and developed their awareness of different ways to manage their emotions as well as taking some time to do some mindfulness colouring. Very insightful conversations were had by all. Well done, Owl Class!

Honourable Holi - RE

The children have loved learning about the story of Prahlad and Holika when learning about the origins of the Holi Festival. They loved exploring the story through drama and were able to articulate the moral of the story and why it is important to Hindus. They understand it is a celebration of good triumphing evil and explored the motives and meaning behind the story through this drama re-enactment. Well done, Owls!

Delightful Dot Day

The children loved exploring Dot Day by creating their own pledges on how they will make their 'mark' during their last year at Primary School. Each child designed a dot or shape whereby they wrote their pledge on what they would like to focus on in the year ahead. The day was inspired by the book 'The Dot' by Peter H. Reynolds and celebrated creativity, courage and making your mark.  The children all had some wonderful ideas – well done, Owl Class!

Perfect Programming

As part of our computing curriculum this term, the children have been developing their debugging skills when using Scratch for programming. They have loved exploring the programming and have been working hard to create their own interactive games, including a scoring system with changing variables. The children's resilience has been impressive and their determination to make their programmes work has been commendable. Well done, Owls – keep up the great work!

Lovely Languages Day

On Thursday 25th September 2025, we celebrated our annual European Day of Languages at Kingfisher. This year, Years 3 and 6 collaborated to focus on learning some German for the day. The children loved learning about the culture in Germany, exploring how to say numbers, greetings and family members as well as spending the morning making gingerbread and creating fact files all about Germany. They loved tasting their gingerbread in the afternoon and joining Mrs Farnell and Mr Green with the Year 3s for a German workshop. A fantastic day was had by all! Well done, Owl Class!

Terrific Team building

As part of our PSHE topic 'Me and My Relationships' the children loved exploring how they can use their communication skills to work collaboratively with their peers. The children had limited resources to build a structure which would be freestanding. It was amazing to see their creativity and initiative in this challenge and some of their structures were truly impressive! Well done, Owls!
