Dragonfly Class had a wonderful morning learning about toys from the past. Natasha from the Heritage Centre brought in a range of old toys and talked to the children about them. The class then had the chance to dress up in Victorian clothes, make thaumatropes, explore the toys, and compare old with new. It was such a fun and memorable experience!
Martin visited to talk to the children about road safety. They learned the important steps of Stop, Look, Listen and Think, and he explained the different types of road crossings. He also talked about why it’s so important to be seen in the dark when near roads.
The children had great fun using autumn leaves to make their own clay dishes. They rolled out the clay, pressed a leaf on top to capture all the lovely shapes and veins, then carefully cut around it and gently shaped it into a little bowl. It was a lovely, hands-on autumn activity!
Dragonflies had a fantastic session with Gary and Kate from Carymoor, where they learned all about the importance of recycling, reducing waste, and reusing everyday items. Gary began with an exciting guessing game, challenging the children to identify different pieces of rubbish from his clues. After that, they headed outside for a fast-paced relay game, sorting rubbish into the correct categories. The children loved the teamwork and the chance to put their new knowledge into action. They also explored a collection of impressive items made entirely from recycled materials. The handbag crafted from can ring pulls was a particular favourite and really inspired the children. It was a brilliant session, and the Dragonflies thoroughly enjoyed their time with the Carymoor team.
The children had great fun during Outdoor Learning this week creating salt-dough hedgehogs. They incorporated natural resources such as sticks for spines and berries and seeds for eyes, resulting in imaginative and nature-inspired creations.
Dragonfly Class created some fantastic firework pictures using chalk. The children used lots of vibrant colours and showed great creativity in their designs, incorporating rockets and a variety of imaginative firework shapes to produce striking, eye-catching artwork.
This half term, the class will be enjoying some outdoor learning, with a focus on the changing seasons. This week, the children explored why leaves change colour and fall from trees in Autumn. After learning about the science behind this transformation, they went on a leaf hunt around the school grounds, collecting leaves of various colours. They then matched their finds to a colour sheet, creating a vibrant display that celebrated the beauty of nature and reinforced their understanding of seasonal change.
This week, Dragonfly Class explored the world of sandwiches with a fun and creative twist! Inspired by the book The Disgusting Sandwich, the children designed their own imaginative (and truly disgusting!) sandwich creations. They also took part in a reading comprehension activity all about jam sandwiches, answering questions and discussing ingredients. To finish off the week, they made their own real sandwiches, choosing from cheese, ham, jam, and cucumber as fillings.
This week in DT, Dragonfly Class designed and made their own bread rolls. They chose their own shapes and fillings—chocolate, plain, or raisins—and enjoyed getting hands-on with mixing, kneading, and baking. A tasty way to learn!
Dragonfly Class had an exciting and insightful morning during Careers Day, where they welcomed seven professionals from a variety of industries to share their career journeys. Each visitor spoke about how they got into their roles, the challenges they’ve overcome, and what their day-to-day work involves. They listened attentively and asked thoughtful, curious questions, showing a real interest in the world of work and what it takes to succeed.
As part of our Black History Month celebrations, Dragonfly Class explored the lives of significant Black individuals who have made a lasting impact on society. One of the key figures they learned about was Rosa Parks, whose courageous stand against racial segregation sparked a movement for justice and equality. To deepen their understanding, the children reenacted Rosa Parks' story, stepping into her shoes to experience the emotions and challenges she faced. This immersive activity helped them grasp the importance of standing up for what is right.Following the reenactment, the class engaged in a thoughtful discussion about respect and fairness, reflecting on how these values shape our communities and relationships.
The children learnt more skills from Sean today, as part of the Chance to Shine cricket programme. They have been learning new skills each week — today, they focused on perfecting their bowling action. Everyone worked hard and showed great improvement.
Dragonfly Class had lots of fun celebrating Dot Day! We listened to the inspiring story all about individuality and making your mark, then worked together to paint colourful dots on the letters of the word Dragonfly. Our collaborative artwork looks fantastic (and is displayed on our classroom window) and it reminds us that everyone’s mark matters!
As part of our Art curriculum this term, the children have been learning all about portraits. They had great fun creating their own using chalk on the playground during a very sunny afternoon! The results were bright, creative, and full of personality — just like our artists!
We’ve been very lucky to have Sean from Somerset Cricket visit our classes this term! The children have been learning the basic techniques of batting and fielding, developing their skills and teamwork whilst having lots of fun. 🏏
